Mady Vieths is a non‑binary artist based in Owatonna, MN.
Their work focuses on ink paintings that weave together the human portrait, poetry, and other natural elements.
They use a refined palette of deep green and vibrant magenta, accented with black ink to create strong contrasts that feel striking and moody.
Their work explores identity, memory, and human connection. Mady’s experience with gender identity shapes how they think about change, fluidity, and the idea that identity doesn’t always fit into fixed categories. The way ink moves and spreads reflects this sense of shifting and openness.
Mady paints intuitively, using almost no reference images and no pencil. They also film their painting process for social media, sharing how each piece comes to life. With organic shapes, bold color, and bits of poetry, they create portraits that invite viewers to think about how their inner lives connect to those around us and how identity keeps changing.
Each painting includes short lines of poetry painted directly onto the surface of the paper, and these phrases become the titles of the pieces. These words give an honest and vulnerable view into Mady’s world - the true processing of emotions and honest reflection, although purposefully vague. The text adds a personal layer that connects the imagery to the emotions behind the work.
